Books

What is a Book?

A book is a collection of either/or writings, images and art bound together between two covers. The books shown below are three I chose from Lens Cultures 2019 Favourite Photobook competition.

This World and Other like it, By Drew Nikonowiez

The Pillar, By Stephen Gill

The Way to the High Mountain, By Eldad Rafaeli

What is an Issuu Book?

Issuu.com is way of viewing digital publications, opposed to physical books. Anyone can upload all over the world, this makes publishing your work much easier and getting it out into the world. Nowadays, unfortunate more medias are viewed online compared to in person and it is more accessible and less time consuming.

Colour, Photobook, By Laura Grimmer

Articulation of The Lost Language, Black and White Photobook, Vol.02, By Elno Yusuf Shugana

I chose Grimmer's photobook, because of her use of lines, perspectives and colour. She has used all three to her advantage, in making abstract frames. Her top four images I think she has composed well in the thought of the top left two and top right two, looking like one image but if you look closer you can in fact see they are four separate images. This shows how she is able to use her creativity and imagination to draw her viewers in and look closer.

I chose Shugana's work due to his perspectives. Rather than taking a picture of what is directly in front of him, Shugana has chosen to take it on an angle, this makes the image more interesting and draws you into it.

The image on the left, is interesting. Shugana is looking through the window, by taking the image through the window, he has had to deal with reflections and because it is in black and white its not as easy to determine what everything is or when it was taken.

Shugana has used what comes across as poetry throughout his book, beside some of his images. His photobook is almost like a riddle, the more you read the deep it gets and the more intriguing.

Photo 2021, International Festival of photography 18.2-7.3.2021, Agonistes, By Hoda Afshar

Photobook of Detroit, By Korzell Coe

I chose Afshar's work located to the right because of the lack of the rest of the persons face. In college for our trip-tych series I took a photography very similar, but portrait. This reminded me, this gives me inspiration to continue to look at the smaller images. The negative space to the side of her space to me gives off a sadness. a lonely space.

Coe, has used layering well to make the viewer look into the image more.  At first glance I wasn't entirely sure what the image was, however once I had looked deeper I realised it was one image layered. I like this effect, it adds more depth to an image. (multiple exposures). Looking at a scene from vehicle height already gives you a different perspective from say standing up.

Peer Analysis - James Wren - Pepper Wood

In this photobook there are two spreads with just one image each, both stand out a great deal. These two catch my eye the most as they the blacks and white are more vibrant and bigger. I think there should have been maybe two more throughout, as it would make a nice series and it would intrude on the other images. This woodland series is looking at pathways through wooded areas, and showing paths to places unknown.

Why online and not a physical book?

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has been in multiple lockdowns and has had to adhere to certain government restrictions, such as social distancing, washing hands for 20 seconds and wear face masks. This new reality we have been living has meant that everything was initially closed, but has begun to reopen since May. Due to my own medical conditions and my families I have still been socially distancing at home. We were able to go back into university as of March, however I stayed online due to isolation.

Lockdown and restrictions still meant that even as reopening happened not everywhere was opened. Places such as certain manufactures, developing companies and shops. It is also much harder to wash books, items that are hard to wash can transmit Covid-19 easily. Making a physical book had too many implications, due to transmission, this meant we create our books online and upload through Issuu.com, as a safe way of uploading and viewing.

An eBook is much more different compared to that of a physical book, one thing being we don't need to make the book itself, its more to do with layout and uploading through Cyberduck and Issuu.

I found the process of Cyberduck and uploading to Issuu.com problematic as i had some technical issues, i think i would have preferred to make a physical book.
