002: Exhibition
Documentary photography has, traditionally been viewed and disseminated in the printed form in books and other print media. More recent, contemporary documentary photographers have increasingly been drawn toward producing their work with the intention of gallery exhibition or installation to compliment and to sit alongside the physical printed book form.
Exhibitions of selected works, both in group exhibitions and as solo shows can give the documentary photographer an additional connection with the viewer and often can afford the photographer the possibility of showing the work as it was intended to be seen. This can elicit a visceral emotion in the viewer that other forms can fail to achieve.
The ability to showcase photographs from an artist’s monograph in the gallery and museum context, extends the audience, reach and reception of each series of images.
This element of the module explores the exhibition of images as a viable and important output for the documentary photographer, how scale and size can influence the viewer and the processes involved in setting up a show.
Additionally, students should question which images are suitable for exhibition and in what size and format. Which paper stocks and print methods are suitable for their own particular output and take account of colour management before printing their final images.
Importantly, students will be expected to investigate and rationalise their approaches when thinking about work intended for a gallery setting.
During the module you will be expected to rationalise your work to plan, print and hang an exhibition at a gallery setting to be confirmed. Please note that this will be a physical exhibition and you will additionally be expected to wall hang your images as part of this module.
It is vital that you consider your images for exhibition seriously, including size and scale as it is intended that the exhibition will be shown in physical form within the university campus.
