Invisible Illness Definition

'People often ask us to define invisible disability. In simple terms, an invisible disability is a physical, mental or neurological condition that is not visible from the outside, yet can limit or challenge a person’s movements, senses, or activities. Unfortunately, the very fact that these symptoms are invisible can lead to misunderstandings,  false perceptions, and judgments'.

My own invisible illnesses/disabilities

  • 95% Irritable Bowel Syndrome/ 5% Irritable Bowel Disease = Constipation, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, and stomach cramps are some of the symptoms of this disease. Symptoms can come and go over time and can last for days, weeks, or months at a time. The exact symptoms depend on what part of the digestive system is involved, which can cause discomfort and serious health problems.
  • Gout = An arthritic condition in which tiny crystals accumulate inside and around the joints is known as gout.
  • Hypermobility Syndrome = Hypermobility refers to the fact that your joints are more flexible than others' (you may think of yourself as being double joined).
  • Asthma = In asthma, your airways narrow, swell, and produce extra mucus.
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome = A group of rare inherited conditions that affect connective tissue.
  • Anxiety and Depression = Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as fear or worry, that can be mild or severe.
  • Eating Disorder = Overweight or fat means having more body fat than is healthy.
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome = Ovulation does not happen
  • Fibromyalgia =condition that causes widespread pain and extreme fatigue
  • Long COVID = Having COVID-19 for longer than the average 2 weeks, e.g. symptoms lasting months

What its like physically & mentally being on medication & supplements...

When I was younger I wanted to be like my mother and take medication because it was grown up, I didn’t know any better so I thought I would be treated as a grown up. Now I have to take lots of medication and supplements every day and I hate it. Especially because I am so forgetful. Some of the tablets are powdery and taste revolting and having to do that every day is hard work and controls my life. When I have forgotten to take my tablets at home and I have to take them at work or university and people see me taking them they look at me like I am some sort of junkie or addict. It’s not the nicest feeling. I also have to rely on them to control my pain to make sure I can get through the day. I don’t like relying on medication its makes me feel so frail and useless in a way because my body isn’t working properly. You don’t truly understand until it’s you taking them. I hope that throughout my journey in my final major project I can depict this so show people that an invisible life isn’t so invisible to the person who is affected.

Types of Research...

Invisible Illness/Disability Survey

Invisible Illness Survey Evaluation

I decided to conduct this survey because I wanted some realistic comments. I found out about some very interesting diseases. Some were very complex and debilitating but also invisible. If you go online you can find a list of invisible illnesses, but from my research it should be so much bigger than that. It was also interesting to see the difference in yes to no on whether or not people had disabled badges. I knew it was hard to get disabled badges but I think it’s outrageous the amount of people that don’t have one and could really use one. If I did this survey again I would calculate age ratio and talk about their responses from people about using a disabled badge.
