Upcoming Pechakucha - Wed 29th June 2022 @ Gloucester Brewery at Gloucester Docks

Co lab @ JOLT - First Thursday of every month (18-30) - good place to network with other creatives

What I took away from JOLT was just how much community support is out there and how much support is still needed i.e. fundraising which they are hoping will become easier once the new part of the University is opened across the road from them and now that Kings Square is up and running. One thing they did say was that they need to get the Cheltenham students over the bus barrier to get to Gloucester. They are only a bus trip away but it seems to be a big barrier. Its nice to see creativity being to thrive once again in Gloucestershire.

Shalize Nicolas (Madia and Matilda) -  A sustainable fashion company located out of Stroud. Originally at the Mills in Nailsworth (trade estate). She said that for her business social media and her local community were the two biggest helps throughout her businesses career but she had to learn how to make those links and how to get the best from social media, she also found herself doing a business course to help her set off. However she also talked about how it is very important to not burn yourself out and to make time for yourself and as a freelancer to be as resilient as you can be to make a name for yourself otherwise you wont get very far.

EJ Benning (Strike a Light) - a national portfolio business that liaises with the Arts Council. They work with people that can't live a 'normal' 9-5 life. They work with people that have chronic pain, no child care, other issues and difficulties. You work with the business and have your own hours to suit your own needs. Working with different people is what makes this business work.

EJ says the best piece of advice she can give is to take art to people, don't wait for them to come to you because they won't and to submit Art Council Applications.

Reflection

I have learnt about how much community there really is in Gloucester and how there is support out there for emerging creatives like myself, not just photographers but illustrators, animators, fine artists etc. Its interesting to learn about the arts council and how they are helping creatives thrive in the Gloucestershire area. What stood out to me was just how far some of the companies are willing to go to help creatives thrive and to support them in their future careers. To help keep them from having to move out of the area just to obtain work. I have learnt that for someone like myself who has medical limitations that I can still have the career that I want and there are people out there that will help me to achieve my goals. I will use my knew found knowledge to support my career and to spread the word that the help is out there for creatives and that we do matter.
